The poetic process.

I have a fascination with the villanelle at the moment, so I thought I would try a little experiment. I want to post each stage of the writing process, word by word, line by line to show how the poems come together, with all the faults and rewriting that I find comes with this form of verse. An insight into all the mistakes that need to be made in order to find the right combinations of words to best describe the point that I'm trying to make. The villanelle is centered on a refrain, the idea that encompases the entire poem. These two lines are repeated throughout and so must be malleable while still summing up the idea behind the poem in a single rhyming couplet. The refrain tends to be free of metrical restrictions and syllabic count, but that does not mean both these poetic tricks cannot be employed. In fact I often enjoy the challenge of sticking to such rules, It can help to focus the mind, and adds a certain musicality to the lines which helps the over all feel of the poem. I am currently working on four seperate villanelles but I thought I would post the refrains from each of them and ask you to pick a favourite. I will then pretty much write the poem online, And see where it leads. I'll post the couplets tomorrow night, so let me know which you prefer and i'll do my best to write a decent poem.
